WATER SECURITY !

How to build  Ferrocement tanks or dams.

Course 25 – 29 July 2011

What is a Ferrocement tank or dam?

Ferrocement tanks are the cheapest and easiest way to store water in large volumes outside of earth dams.

Ferrocement tanks are built by hand-trowelling layers of cement mortar onto a

wire frame which is free-standing. The tanks are covered by a ferrocement dome and are pleasing on the eye.

They can vary in size, capacity and can be built sunken into the earth to function as a swimming pool. They can be painted so that they blend into the surrounding environment and do not leach toxins into the water as plastic tanks do.

Ferrocement tanks can be built up to 380 000 liters !!

A ferrocement tank wall is only about 5 cm thick!

Ferrocement is needed only for tanks of capacities greaterthan 1000 litre. You will be building a Ferrocement tank of 23 000 liters over five days with an expert. The 23 000 liter tank costs in the region of R7000 to build.

Advantages of a ferrocement tank?

Costs are about a third of plastic tanks and cheaper than building a tank from bricks or poured cement into formwork.

· Ferrocement tanks are more flexible than normal cement tanks and can withstand greater shock

· After the course you will be able to build your own 23 000 liter tank – then work your way up from a 23 000 liter tank to 50 000 etc. The larger the tanks the more cost effective they are to make.

· Tanks can be repaired

· Longevity – tanks can last from 40 – 80 years

· Ferrocement tanks require less skilled labour
